Starting Hyperion Planning – System 9

The startup sequence of Hyperion Planning has a lot of people confused. Although the documentation that comes bundled with the product is ample and very comprehensive, it does take a little getting used to. When I first started working on the product, it did take me a while to get the hang of it. I personally feel its better to start the services manually (you can write a script to automate it of course) than to use the shortcuts (they point to batch files) that are created in the Hyperion menu as you install/configure each product.

So for a typical Hyperion Planning installation, the following products would/should be installed on the system:

  • Foundation Services/Shared Services
  • Essbase Server; Essbase Administration Services; Essbase Provider Services
  • Oracle Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management Architect
  • Planning
  • Hyperion Reporting and Analysis

For each of these products (after successful installation and configuration) the following services should be available in the services console:

  • Hyperion S9 Administration Services <Webserver Acronym>
  • Hyperion S9 Apache 2.0
  • Hyperion S9 BI+ 9.3 Core Services 1
  • Hyperion S9 BI+ 9.3 Financial Reporting Java RMI Registry
  • Hyperion S9 BI+ 9.3 Financial Reporting Print Server
  • Hyperion S9 BI+ 9.3 Financial Reporting Report Server
  • Hyperion S9 BI+ 9.3 Financial Reporting Scheduler Server
  • Hyperion S9 BI+ 9.3 Financial Reporting Web Application
  • Hyperion S9 BI+ 9.3 Interactive Reporting Service 1
  • Hyperion S9 BI+ 9.3 Web Analysis
  • Hyperion S9 BI+ 9.3 Workspace
  • Hyperion S9 BI+ Analytic Services 9.3.1 – <Essbase Server Name>
  • Hyperion S9 EPM Architect Data Synchronization <Webserver Acronym>

to start up automatically. Set all others for manual start up.

For the rest of the services follow the following order:

    • The following services are automatically started by the parent process
      • Hyperion S9 EPM Architect Engine Manager
      • Hyperion S9 EPM Architect Event Manager
      • Hyperion S9 EPM Architect Job Manager
  3. Hyperion S9 BI+ Analytic Services 9.3.1 – <Essbase Server Name>
  4. Hyperion S9 Administration Services <Webserver Acronym>
  5. Hyperion S9 Provider Services <Webserver Acronym>
  6. Hyperion S9 BI+ 9.3 Interactive Reporting Service 1
  7. Hyperion S9 BI+ 9.3 Workspace
  8. Hyperion S9 BI+ 9.3 Financial Reporting Java RMI Registry
  9. Hyperion S9 BI+ 9.3 Financial Reporting Print Server
  10. Hyperion S9 BI+ 9.3 Financial Reporting Report Server

From here on you should be ready to start working on the Hyperion Planning product.

    I have a few questions for you.

    1, Why do we have to follow a specific order when we start all those services?

    2.how do I use EPM Architect to create a planning application? What is the URL to access EPM Architect, like we do with workspace? What roles do EPM Architect play in 931 and 111?
