Netbook sales will soar to 22 million in 2009. IDC reported this previous Friday that the sales of netbooks grew 7 times (yes 700%) YoY for the first quarter of 2009.
This makes perfect sense when you think of the economic recession and the price of the mainstream laptops. Most users are moving towards highly mobile and always connected (internet enabled) devices to access the web-based services that we have all come to rely on.
Steve Jobs famously dismissed the segment as ‘a piece of junk’ and I have a fairly good guess that this quote will be in the realm of the ‘640K ought to be enough for everbody’. I think Apple will have to come out with some serious sub-compact devices in order to stay a competitive player. They’ve created a very important niche for their products but as people cut down on spending it makes more sense to have sub-compact devices in the affordable sub-$500 range.
